VCR Repairability

I've heard that VCRs manufactured after year 2000 are not considered repairable, as far as the transport mechanism goes.

What are the reasons and details behind this? Does it have to do with the quality of parts and/or the overall design? Are the mechanisms not designed to be disassembled?

Also, was there a consolidation across the industry to using just one or two mechanisms?
