JVC GR-C7 camcorder, flashing lights

I have a JVC GR-C7 VHS-C camcorder from 1986. It usually works just fine, but once in a while, while playing a tape, it inexplicably stops playing, retracts the tape, and then the Stop and FF lights flash. It then won't respond any further until I turn it off and back on, after which it works just fine.

Anyone know what causes this, or what the flashing lights mean? I couldn't find a manual online, and the GR-C1 manual doesn't mention any similar condition. The Zenith VM6200 is the same camcorder, if anyone has a manual for that. I have two of these, and it's just this one that does this.

Thanks!

Edit: I guess this is my first post! I've been a member for 3 years and thought I've made posts before, but I guess not. So, hello!
