A Christmas Message from TV Guide- 1958

Christmas, that joyous, religious holiday is again upon us. Christmas the season of good will, which seems all too rare these days. Christmas the season of giving... and Christmas, the family holiday enjoyed by all its members no matter how young, no matter how old. We would like to speak up at this season for television. It is proper that we do, for no medium has meant more to the American family. It has united the family in the home for hours of fun, inspiration, education and religion. Noted clergymen have taken advantage of its pulpit. Religious services have been telecast. Indeed, many are being telecast this week. During this family holiday it is pertinent that television the family medium, is an instrument for good will, too - for creating understanding by showing us the faces of our neighbors, by explaining, their problems, their dreams. It is an instrument of giving too, for it has given happiness to millions everyday of the year and think of how it dispels loneliness for the shut-in and the aged. We stress these contributions now because they are often overlooked by the medium's critics, who dwell upon its imperfections while ignoring its many virtues. So during the holidays when families gather for pleasure, for reflection, for prayer, for inspiration, we want to emphasize the beneficial influence that television has had upon the family. We also want to extend holiday greetings to those men and women who work in the many phases of this pervasive medium. To all of them, to all our readers, we wish a very Merry Christmas and a most Happy New Year.
