If it does not have the tv shell to protect it, they may not want to take it thinking it will break while they handle it. If it's already broken, then surely the bad stuff will get out and they will have to pay big time to clean it up.... (naturally not knowing anything about it, like the lead for example, it's embedded in the glass, can't get on them...)

If it doesn't LOOK like everything else they get, they sure don't want it.....

Breaking it up more and putting it in several bags and hiding it will most likely prevent a wasted trip in which you will have to bring it home, and then try and hide it in something....

I remember a story where somebody took a case of radioactive strontium rods to a hazmat roundup, and they had no clue what they were until it was too late (already accepted and shipped out). There was no leak, but it caused a huge panic! (the rods had been swiped from a nuke lab 50 years before).
