That would've been me in 1955 but I think I had enough sense to solder stuff back in my workshop and not on the rug. How many kids today know how to make things, take things apart and fix them and put them back together? So much is throwaway and it's easy to get instant gratification with cheap cheap electronics. A lot of us gathered old chassis for parts and made our radios and such. What a feeling to hear the first squeals of regeneration and know that it was going to work! I know what you mean about lawnmowers, too: I kept one running fine until the chassis no longer cast a shadow!
