Ben said he would kill Penny because she is Widmore's daughter and he sent the mercenaries to the island to kill Ben, but they killed his daughter so for revenge he said he would kill Penny, right ?

And before they got on the plane, Ben told Jack, "Ive got to do something" and the something, I thought was to go and kill Penny. Then he shows up on the plane all bloody, so you expect he was met from some resistance in his mission to kill Penny.
