What will happen to DVD?

Is the DVD format already doomed? It's been just a few years that DVD players appeared, and it's been even more recently that they became affordable to the masses, and now...there's Blue Ray and HD DVD. It seems that the industry is just waiting to see which one of them will win the war for the consumer preference, to bury the already "old" DVD format. I ask, what is in store for the millions of DVD player owners like myself all around the world? Does any or both of this new formats play the current DVD format? If not, I don't like the prospect of just in a few years going to shop and not finding any movie that I can play on my "old" DVD player. There are millions of DVD players in the world right now, will they allienate all this people? I really strongly dislike the idea of having to put my hands on my pockets and have to buy a new player and new discs, after all, money isn't the sort of thing that grow in trees, and I am very satisfied with the quality of image that my DVD player provides. I really hope that they continue to make convencional DVD discs for many years to come ( like they did with 78 rpm records - here in Brazil, at least, they were still being recorded in the 1960's ). If not, it will be really a case of corporate greed.
