Deadwoodheads
I was going to inquire if there were any "Deadwood" fans here on AK, and am glad I clicked search. A highly addictive program...but it's one of those "love it or hate it" situations, I'm sure. I still can't decide who is more evil: Al Swearingen or Cy Tolliver. Both Ian McShane (Al) and Powers Boothe (Cy) grabbed their roles by the horns and ran with them...but I think Boothe takes Cy right over the top and beyond. Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane) evidently also saw the chance to grab a part and make it her own...she's a hoot! I only wish Wild Bill would've been able to stick around a little longer...Carradine OWNED the part. Also must mention Brad Dourif's portrayal of Doc Cochran. Must've been a tough job keeping the whores healthy back in the day. And E>B Farnum is the ultimate toady. I've had the pleasure of meeting John Hawkes (Sol Starr) a couple of times..he's from Alexandria, MN (near where I live) and had the chance to speak to him shortly after he'd been cast for the part. Couldn't tell me much other than he would be in a Western series on HBO, and that he found it interesting and challenging. Advised me to keep an eye out for it, and glad I did. As far as the obscenity? Hardly notice it...in fact, find it rather entertaining. I believe these characters may exceed the talents of a grizzled Marine GySgt in that regard. My wife? She won't admit it...but has come to enjoy the program. She's rather liberal-minded, and, having raised three boys, has somewhat of an "iron ear". Even so, I've heard her emit an "eek" when a particularly vile string of cuss words comes eloquently flowing out of someone's mouth. All-in-all, a fun show and I wouldn't think of missing it. (BTW...Gerald McRaney's arc as that snake Hurst has been fun as well. Good to see his minion "The Captain" get his comeuppance at the hand of Al's guy Dan!!)

The eloquence of their vocabulary enhanced with the most god awful expletives is one of the most fascinating aspects of the show. Everyone talks like they are writing a poem or something. I guess that's how it was way back then...
And I agree it's too bad Wild Bill Hikcock couldn't have lasted a few more shows...John Carradine was awesome... And like the Sopranos, an awesome tune plays whilst the credits roll! Cool Show!

Poor Doc Cochran...what's he have? TB? Pertussis? Doesn't sound like he's too long for this world. And I'm beginning to wonder about Clamaity Jane's er, um, uhh, sexual orientation.

Great show; I get the feeling that they did lots of research before writing. Good writing and good casting go along together, Can't wait for it to start up again!!!

Headin' for a showdown
Well, Hearst's "load of bricks" has arrived in Deadwood. How will Al and his posse counteract? Wyatt Earp may be of some help, but his bro Morgan? seems like an unreliable hothead to me. Steve the Drunk got his...Doc pretty much kissed him off. I think Calamity Jane kinda liked her Sapphic session...but of course would never admit it...or will she? Countin' the hours til the next episode.

This is it!!!
Well...Sunday night it all comes to an end. Is Al really a nice guy underneath it all? You'd think so...given how quickly he came to Charlie Utter's aid and hustled Mrs. Ellsworth to the Gem for safety after someone plinked at her. Even offered her a snort to setle the ol' nerves. Of course, Al also has shown he doen't have to rely on his minions to do what needs to be done: witness him kicking the chicken soup out of Hearst's guy, then calmly slitting his throat and ordering him to be taken down to Wu's for hog food. Then he had to needle Hearst about the guy. Hearst evidently put two and two together, and had Ellsworth whacked. Poor guy. So, the big showdown's Sunday night...or is it? Even though it's listed as the season finale, it's the series finale. HBO has indicated they'd like to do a couple of 2 hour movies to tie up loose ends...let's hope so. Gonna miss the show. But, I can take consolation in the fact that "Rome" is due back. Whole 'nother thread there.

Why wife got me hooked on it. We don't have HBO, but take the disc out for free from the library. You can take out the whole season at once, so we do a marathon for 7 days before they need to be returned. `My wife's friend made us a deal that we could watch HBO on demand while they were away if we could take care of her rabbit. We have two more episodes to watch and i heard they are ending with a mini series. great show.

If you take out the DVD's there are lots of extras. The language is hyped up more than it really was, because today's audience wouldn't find the original obscene words as rough. They had to make it almost every other word to have the desired effect. The DVD's are worth wtching for the extras. We might take them out again, just to get some of what we missed the first time.
