Success, wonderful success! I did some more resistance checking. When I unclipped the doorknob capacitor, the 12M resistance from pins 2,4,6&7 disappeared. Sure enough, when directly probed, there is a 12M resistance/leakage through the doorknob cap. I just ordered a couple from surplus sales of Nebraska.
Here it is with the capacitor unconnected.
