Found a bit of an odd DVD player. Audio is messed up

Never heard of the AMW brand before. This DVD player is an AMW Model T-352

What makes this a bit odd is it has a built in AM/FM receiver.

Testing reveals the reason why it was thrown out. The audio sounds really weird. Bass is crackly and distorted regardless of volume, mids and highs sound weird and echoy.

From my brief testing, the sound seems mostly okay with the AM/FM tuner... maybe a bit clipped. A/V sounds awful.

Oh and a funny note it came with a DVD of The Waterboy in it. Considering the quality of that movie, yeah I can see they threw it out with the player.

So what would cause clipped, distorted sound? Far as I know no channels are blown, and the capacitors look okay.

Well if it has an AM/FM Stereo Receiver built-in more than likely it was a surround sound receiver with a built-in DVD Player, as for the funky sound maybe you could try messing around with the graphic equalizer effects, sometimes these things have really weird Graphic Equalizer effects built-in (kind of like how your computer sound systems do) whick make your sound sound funky.

Seeing as the volume was at zero when I found it in the trash, I doubt it could be an equalizer setting. Clicks sound echoy, bass is crackled and distorted.

Captainclock may be right, this was a "Home Theater in a box" originally, it may not work right without the speakers that go with it or you may need to turn off the surround features and just use the right and left front channel outputs.

Looks like you guys were right, maybe.

There is a reverb effect on the A/V selection. Turning that off got rid of, well, the reverb.

I also solved the crackling bass issue, but it required me reducing the audio level at the source to a pretty low volume, as in about 25% where as my other amps can handle a full 100% line in signal. Is something broken on this or does it just have a really shitty amp?

Does it have regular Red & White Audio Out jacks on the back?

I would think those would be standard line out and would work fine with any amps CD or Aux input

Well, it has regular red and white jacks as part of its A/V in jacks, so, red, white and yellow. Red and white work without having to hook up anything to the yellow. However like I said, I need to put the volume low to get non crackly audio.

I can turn the receiver itself to maximum volume just fine.

You may have damaged output transistors or the driver transistors might be bad, I have an old Kenwood amplifier from the 1970s that had a similar issue where the audio would be crackly and staticky and the problem with that was that the driver transistors were bad so I replaced them and now it works fine, so you might check the driver and or output transistors in the amplifier on the thing and see if they might be a little toasty from someone maybe turning it up too loud one time and shorting out the transistors.

Looks like an old "Black Friday" special to me, that would be the problem. I have not seen a HTB under $500 that lasted over a year. I would put this in the pile with the old Apex $30 DVD players.

If its the controls .It looks like the original owner did not read the how to use instructions or the kids fiddled with the settings on them and the owner gave up and dumped it.I see alot of that finding good working stuff or stuff with screwed up settings at the curb.
