How do I get rid of horizontal lines?
Just finished recapping my 1960 Magnavox.
I just put it all back together and can't get the picture back! There are about 6 or 7 black lines on a slight diagonal angle, and I cant really see the picture. Does the set need alot of time to warm up after new capacitors were installed? I have had it going for more than one hour and no difference. I don't want to mess with the fine tuning in the lower back, since the picture was perfect before I took it apart. Unless maybe the new capacitors changed the tuning? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Do you have sound? You sure it's not just the horizontal hold adjustment. pics would help

It sounds like you just need to adjust the Horizontal Hold, if the normal Hold control doesn't have enough range there should be a Horiz Frequency coil somewhere on the chassis that may need tweaked.

It should do "something' when you turn that control. If it doesn't, you need to go back and check your work in that section. The frequency may be off a tad.

The lines aren't moving at all, they stand still.
I tried the Horiz freq. and if I turned it plus or minus, the lines would start moving, so I put it back to where it was. |

Got it!!!!
Special thanks to mstaton, and Eric H. I could never have done it without your expertise!! I went back, and tried turning the Horiz.Freq alot further, and slowly it started to get less and less lines, 5,4,3,2 then crystal clear! I will plan on posting some photos of this great set within a couple days. It's my first set, I could never have completed it without all the help from everyone here at VideoKarma!! Magnavox300 |

Congrats on your first set!
Just curious, does your horizontal hold control still not affect the picture at all? |

Welcome to the affli.. er, addiction. Just for yukkles, turn the set off for about 5 - 10 seconds and then back on. See if the Horiz is slow locking in or comes on in sync immediately. If slow, the H osc tube is getting a bit tired. It's a quickie way of showing up marginally weak tubes (like vert. out, Hor. out etc.). Handy item to bookmark for future referance.

Which CRT does your set use? I've got a 23" and a 24" Maggie entertainment center very similar to yours. Only thing I've done is replace the big capacitors in the power supply, so far... Picture looks very good...

When I first looked at all the capacitors I had to replace, I thought it was too much for me to do!! Now that i finished it, it wasn't hard at all! It was actually very enjoyable to recap and can't wait to redo another one! Yes the horizontal hold does affect the picture. Actually I need to adjust it each time I turn it on. So maybe I need to replace the tubes like old_koot88 said. Magnavox300 |

I was second guessing replacing all the caps, but glad I did anyway, so now I can enjoy it without worrying!! Magnavox300 |
