This was delivered last weekend from the Washington DC 'burbs for the gas money.
First old TV I have really worked on in a while... All the sweep and power tubes had been replaced. These tested OK, but tuner, IF and video tubes were very weak and/or showed shorts. Common for sets in strong signal areas. The 21ZP4 Sylvania CRT was pretty sleepy and came up to 3/10 after a few hours. I will plug tubes in and fire up w/o the 5U4s in... All the filaments light without the two 5U4s inserted. Next I will pull out the chassis and disconnect two electrolytic cans. I don't have time to properly stuff these so I will disconnect them and hide the new ones under the chassis. Also need to build a box for the back cover using heavy posterboard. I like to SEE and document the results of any kine-related interventions  The high voltage can is the first I have ever seen. I thought the idea was to enclose the fly AND the HV rectifier tube to reduce dust and limit X-ray emissions.  I don't have the factory or Sams schematic on this one but I can usually get by unless something needs some advanced troubleshooting.  The speaker is driven by a 6V6 and pretty impressive, but this appears to be a more expensive TV for late 1954.  GE spkr.jpgThe cabinet is pretty grungy, and I can't wait to try Banderson's restoration method using GOJO  A blond finish like this may just need a good cleaning.  GE front closed.jpg

Unless the HV is powered by Pepridge farms....

Fruitcake LOL. I need to post the photo under chassis. All the notorious paper cap types are represented... We are all familiar with them...which do you find the most troublesome? The worst experiences were the bumblebees (black one with orange rings) IMG_2283.jpg I think the "dominos and red chicklets" are paper too. If there was a fruitcake rattling around inside the cabinet it would still be good.....cause if a Twinkie can survive an A-bomb than a fruitcake can survive the apocalypse (50+ years in the back of a TV is nothing compared to that).

Dang - there's a camera in my shop
Seeing that the 1B3 socket appears like a coffee cup, I went looking for cookies.
5-15 004.jpg I opened the can up, none too carefully, and found a doughnut. Of course there was no reason to do that but now the 1B3 plate lead being pretty stiff, pulled the solder cleat right off the fly, breaking the wire.  This may stop me from going any further. 5-15 008.jpg Since I do not have the SAMS 264 or fact'ry book for this set, does anyone know the fly's secondary resistance? Is there a solvent to soften the winding glue enough to peel back some of this hair-thin wire to re-connect it?5-15 025.jpg

Sams shows 390 ohms from 6BQ6 plate to 1B3 plate.

Those comical shaped peaks around the tube sockets, and rows of studs elsewhere on the chassis, look like the type of terminals Zenith used a lot of. The assemblers in the factory would stuff these cones with leads of resistors and capacitors, "Hand crafted" and the chassis would go thru a wave soldering station. Then excess leads were removed by some sort of saw or grinder. Then after that, parts that would have stuck up in the wave solder bath (like the IF cans) are added. At least that's what a coworker who used to work for Zenith said they did.

Thanks Kevin, I'll post some pics of my strategy for "capturing the lead, reattaching it and securing the whole business with the fiberglass tape like original.
Wa2ise, this set is WAY different than the PC board GE's and that's why I'm putting the effort forth. Thanks for the Zenith story. Zenith seemed to keep doing that method even after going modular I have to find a way to re-tread the tire also. Many years ago, I stripped the entire cover off the flyback in my RCA CTC12 because it was arcing-burning and tracked. Covered the whole thing with GC "red stuff" and it was fine after that. S A V E !
