Finally fixing my late 90's Zenith

The TV that gets the most use in my house is a floor model Zenith, the model number is A27A74R, and it was built in 1998. Since I bought it about five years ago it doesn't really display the color blue very well, if at all. This drives most people crazy, as the screen has a permanate yellow tint. Though I still have at least 75 other TV's I could choose from I really like the cabinet style of this set, and I'm finally going to call someone for service. Just was curious if somebody could tell me what to expect being wrong with it before hand.

Also guess I'm writing this as I was a little surprised to see a Zenith produced as late as 1998, guess I was under the impression they were defunct sometime before 1995?

Defunct, no. Zenith lives on, as rebadged LG (Lucky/Goldstar) products. ZERO american ties.

They sort of sold themselves, in chunks, to LG in the 90's to "save the company".....

I think you are going to have a problem getting a decent picture on that set. That set probably has the last of the extremely bad Zenith CRT's. It's pretty much impossible to get a good used CRT made at that time.

I agree. Zenith CRT's from around '92-'98 were terrible. You likely have a weak gun in your tube and another tube will be the only lasting fix. Unfortunately, most used tubes that you'd find would be just as bad, or worse, than what you have and a new tube, if you could get one, would cost a whole lot more than what you could buy another TV for. Somewhere around '99, Zenith started using Philips and the bonded yoke style Thomson/RCA CRT's in their sets. It's a shame that it took them that long to figure out that their CRT's were crap and finally do something about it.

i have a very late zenith 27 inch crt.i read somewhere they were made by toshiba?it is an upgrade from those horrid crts from the early to mid 90s.holding on to this one in case another aker would need it.

I replaced many of those late Zenith tubes with rebuilds. Several I know of are still playing, and looking just fine. I cant think of what I said to the owners to get them to replace the tube, vs. buy a new set. One, I think, was bought to fit in an exact space.

Thats what I thought. Was really surprised to see that Glenview IL address on the back of the set. I figured my console was from after the company had been sold.

I know Zenith marketed a console TV as recent as 2001 because a lady gave me one a few years back. I can't remember if it was a 25" or 27"; but, it had minor lightning damage and a decent CRT. I sold it for $50 to someone who really wanted a console.
