Paint for test gear case
I have an old signal strength meter that has grey crackle paint on it. Case is aluminum, BTW. Anyone know where I could find that or similar paint??

Try this:
http://www.amazon.com/Vht-Paint-Sp20.../dp/B004C11JCQ That's gray wrinkle paint. Some units used a finish called gray hammertone. |

Is it in need of repainting, or just dull? I've had good luck restoring some old boatanchor-style test equipment by spraying WD40 on the finish and wiping it down with a cotton cloth. GE Ham news suggests wiping down with Mineral Oil or 20W/30W oil.
I've also repainted with blue hammertone paint from ACE hardware with outstanding results. 2 light coats, followed by baking in the oven (an old surplus oven used to bake out moisture in aircraft instruments) at 170 degrees for 15 minutes - hard as a rock, and glossy to boot. Cheers,

Unfortunately the bob91343 link says "out of stock".
It amazes me to see the number of people who are searching for this product which no one seems to make. I would not be able to do the baking trick referred to above. The cabinet needs repainting.

Plastikote 217 Black Wrinkle finish is available nationwide at Carquest Auto Parts places, and at Northern Tool and Supply. I guess you'd paint black, and then give it a light coat of gray to prevent finish "build"
Krylon makes it too - 3317 Black Wrinkle paint. Our PepBoys carries wrinkle and hammertone finishes, as do most "DoIt" franchise hardware stores. There's also spray "grit" paint that applies a non-skid surface, haven't tried that stuff, but would like it for a stainless bumper I have on my truck. Cheers,

I had suggestions to do as F-K has suggested and that seems to be the only realistic solution. So, tomorrow I'll paint shop!
