This has recently appeared on a NZ auction site, pity it won't work here though otherwise I'd go for it.....

No, it WON'T work there, but they're pretty kewl just as they are...And, come to think about it, they don't work HERE anymore, either, but I ain't gonna toss mine...I think it might be callin' you, wanting you to give it a lovin' home..."Glen...Glen...You WANT me, you KNOW you do...Please let me come live with you, OK ?!? Yes it would look cool amongst all my other mono sets and would be a 'one off' for my collection..hmm maybe I might watch the auction and see what happens...Is there anyway I actually could use it here? Firstly a step down transformer, I got a few of those and some kind of a PAL to NTSC converter with RF out and a NTSC DVD player?

Why wouldn't a TV work here (US)? Are you referring to the change of signal to digital?

If so, I hate it myself because although you can use a VCR, DVD, or a digital receiver for old sets, I have more bad luck than good getting the same quality of play on channel 3 or 4 than I ever did on the old regular VHF channels. I have been pulling hair with my 1956 Philco that played faithfully for all these years, beyond even my own years, only to be reduced to VCR movies or even the digital converter that both bear what I would describe as a weak signal. There is noticeable "snow" in both audio and video and a reduced volume level. Actually, I am experiencing similar issues with two other sets that I have up and running at this time.

I think they are referring to the overseas PAL tv format vs. the NTSC tv format our tvs over here use..

Actually, the video would work fine with PAL. Sound would be a problem because of the different aural/visual separation, but a good technician could probably retune the audio section.

IIRC, when refering to B/W sets they used the designation CCIR. I have a Sony multi-standard 9" B/W portable that has a switch that selects NTSC and CCIR. I don't know old it is but it has UHF. It also has channel 1.

Hi Steve, so I'm gathering that if I get this set it would work with 625 lines/50Hz PAL video signal? At least theres no colour information to screw things up...

Yes, it should. The horizontal scanning rate is very close, and the vertical hold control should adjust to 50 Hz. If not, some experimentation with changing a capacitor in the vertical oscillator section might be necessary. As I mentioned before, the aural carrier is separated from the visual carrier by 5.5 mHz as compared to 4.5 mHz in the NTSC system. The aural IF amplifier and ratio detector would have to be retuned to 5.5 mHz.

Thanks for that Steve, this makes me more keen on it now! I am more than capable of playing around with the vert osc to suit and retuning the sound IF..should be an interesting little project if I win the auction... I might need some guidance for VK members as I've never even seen a TV set as old as this one!
