I always liked the 1953 era Philco TV's.

Also, a few years ago there was found a pair of 1953 Philco TV's brand new in an old shop. I think they are in the WV radio museum now. When I saw a picture of those new Philco's, it really was what made me focus on TVs rather than just antique Radios.

Same knobs and brass center cover but I think that one is a 54 model, probably pretty close electronically.

BTW, I got this set from a Thrift Store a few blocks from my House, they called me about it because I had left my number and told them I was interested in old TV sets.

I tested the CRT at the store and knew it was weak but the set was so immaculate otherwise I bought it anyway.
I've since found a rebuilt tube to put in it, from a relative of Charles no less.

I didn't replace the four section cap yet, I have to get a 500v cap to replace the 475v section.

I put a couple Diodes across the Seleniums to see how it would perform, I was getting about 285 volts of B+, probably a little high if the schematic is correct for this set, however the set fired up nice and bright, I had to adjust the Width and Horiz Osc to compensate for the new filter caps and the extra voltage.

I will still have to change the four section cap, it's very difficult to get good Vertical Linearity and height together, also the Lin control is maxed out at one end, I suspect one section of that cap is in the vertical circuit.

When I first got this set running, back around 2001, the Vertical tube went bad in a fairly spectacular display of arcing and meltdown in a matter of minutes, a new tube fixed it but I wonder now if the Cap caused it's demise, possibly reforming itself later with a new tube.

I probably never went through this set and checked the resistors either, it was a quick recap to get it running and it worked well enough that I never bothered to do any more.

Are you positive that your set is a '53? The knobs and center plate look like '54 to me. Perhaps it is a late '53 made set but built to '54 design, as the line was changing to the '54 models, This might perhaps explain the stamped model number on the tube chart.

I'm not 100% sure, it could be a 54.

I've found ad's on eBay for it and they were dated 1953, admittedly by the eBay sellers themselves.

I did find a rubber stamped 3-27 on the chassis, if that's a date it would be the middle of 53 so it could be a 54 model.
I'll look for some dates on the original tubes, if there are any, it's a high mileage set.
