I'm Looking for a Spare Tripler - Videokarma.org TV - Video

If anyone, especially someone from the Chicagoland area, has a spare tripler that I can replace on my 1974 RCA XL-100 please let me know. I was told that this is what I need to get the sound, picture, and knobs working again on the set.

Hey Matt,

I would really like to suggest you seek help form someone with tv repair experience. Throwing parts at something that thats malfunctioning is never the right way to solve the problem. You can also cause unintended problems doing this.

I believe what was suggested based on your description was, it 'could' be or 'may' be the tripler. Thats just a guess based on the noise/symptoms you described.

If the set was damaged in shipping the tripler would be the last thing to suspect.

Please seek help from a professional or experienced tech on this one. This will ensure the set gets fixed properly and provides years of trouble free service.

I don't think a bad tripler is going to cause no sound on this model, just lack of high voltage.
If nothing at all works, not even the dial lights, it's more likely a power supply issue.

My comments about it being a Tripler earlier was based only on the hissing sound, a Tripler can arc and cause this but at this point I'm not sure where your hiss is coming from the Tripler or the speaker?

right.you should still have sound at a lower level.also the horizontal control will cause a difference in the noise.he was given instructions to check his tripler.never buy parts and throw at it until you have done a proper check of the set.tripler usually dont get damaged,however,they can go at anytime.hopefully with the expert guidance that is here in this forum,he can diagnose and repair this gem.also,he will learn.learning is power!

I don't think I've had a tripler go bad in this chassis; but, I have had one go bad in one of the newer flat chassis RCA colortrak sets of the late '70's. The symptom was a squealing sound at turn-on followed by the set shutting down. When I unsoldered and removed the HV input wire (wire coming from flyback transformer) to the tripler, the set came on and stayed on. There was, of course, no HV to the CRT; but, it had sound from the speaker. If you remove the input lead to the tripler, make sure it can't arc to something else. If the tripler is bad, removing it from the circuit should restore sound from the speaker.

Over the years, I've found that the triplers in RCA sets are more reliable than the ones in Zenith and Sylvania sets. I'm basing my opinion on the number of RCA triplers that I've replaced vs. triplers in other brands.

Oh, and I remember one other bad tripler in an RCA CTC68 console. That one actually cracked and busted in half.

If I were close to you, I'd be glad to take on your set. Hopefully, someone in your area will chime in and agree to help you out with this one.

At this point in time, I'm not trying to fix this on my own. I don't want to negligently cause permanent damage to the TV by trying to repair this all by myself. This is why I'm trying to seek help from someone in the area who specializes in older-style tube/solid state TV sets.

I did find someone about an hour and a half away from me. However, he doesn't specialize in 1970's tube/solid state TVs, so ideally he wouldn't be the best repairman. This is why I'm still looking for someone near me who "does" specialize in these types of sets; however, I haven't had much luck, despite there being several members on here from the suburbs of Chicago.

those triplers went back more frequently than you might remember.we had many that would kill the high voltage back then.not too many arcing,just dead units.a serviceman today still should be able to diagnose and repair this set easily.doesnt have to "specialize" in anything.i get jobs everyday in auto repair and i really dont "specialize" in any one area.i am certifieed in all areas.of course i d rather be doing brakes and suspension work.ok,i guess i "specialize" in brakes and suspension!
