Rabbit ears on a VGA monitor used for HDTV
Yes, I know nobody uses CRT type VGA monitors anymore, but I think CRTs still make a good HDTV display. Added a pair of rabbit ears to the top back of the monitor, just like it was a portable color TV set. Make that a luggable color TV set, it's heavy. The rabbit ears came from junked GE portables. The RCA satellite receiver here is being used for ATSC HDTV reception, and it has a VGA connector on its back. Added an F connector to the monitor that feeds the rabbit ears, via a balum, thru said connector to the receiver.

I have the exact same monitor up in my attic. I don't use it anymore on any computers, but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it because the I thought picture on it was so good.
I might try using it for a tv like that. Specifically, what kind of satellite receivers work for regular over the air ATSC HDTV reception, and have the VGA output?

It's an RCA DTC210 High Def DIRECTV Receiver. I see a few on evilbay. A friend of my mom's gave me this box, and it came with a deactivated card. Which may be necessary to have, to allow you to set it up to receive ATSC over the air signals. Even if you don't have a satellite dish (I don't).

I have a computer gaming LAN center set up upstairs that 3 of my computers use that exact same monitor. The other 4 have 2 apple 17" trinitron monitors I converted to pc and 2 have Dell trinitrons. All are of course CRT's still. The main pc downstairs uses a 20" flatscreen I repaired the filters in the power supply. Got it for free.

That's a good way to get HDTV on the cheap. CRT computer monitors can usually be obtained for free or cheap and I see these satellite receivers for around $50 on ebay.

Some of the HDTV tuners with RGB/"VGA" outputs include the RCA DTC-100, Proscan PS-HD105 (same box as the RCA '100), Zenith HD-SAT520, Zenith 420 (not sure of exact model number), Hughes HTL-HD, Sony 200 and 300 (not sure of exact model numbers), Samsung SIR-T150, 160, 360. With any of these tuners and a VGA monitor, you would need a separate amplifier and speakers for sound.
Also, one important detail if you want to try connecting any of the tuners to a computer monitor: Almost any CRT computer monitor will work (as long as it can display a 1024x768 signal or better, which is almost all of them since about 1994), but few LCD monitors will work unless they are specifically described as being HDTV-compatible. Actually, most newer 16:9 LCD monitors can probably accept a 720p signal from an HD tuner, but the RCA and Proscan above, among others, can only output 1080i HD signals (in addition to SD).
