anybody know anything about this set?

tube/hybrid/crt type/year?

It's a 10" solid state color set from the late '70's to early '80's. This is the unofficial "portacolor III" and is what replaced the tube type portacolor sets in the late '70's. The portacolor II was a short lived solid state version of the tube portacolor and was made in the early '70's.

These portacolor III's are still cute sets and decent performers when working right.

Looking at this set again, I see that it uses the old style knobs like what was on the late run tube type portacolors, so that would make this one an early solid state "portacolor III" from '78-'79. Around '79, they switched to the newer style tuner knobs.

I like the way those make the color blue. Grab it if you haven't already, they are neat little sets.

Its about a 200 mile round trip, of course shipping may be an option if its not too big.

Actually a great little set! It suffered from intermittant problems because of griplets connecting upper and lower foil traces. Once the board is removed and griplets soldered (pay attention to those under the delay line), the tuner cleaned and make sure the vertical outputs are connected right (no flipped socket plugs or swapped plugs, these little guys can give incredible service. We repaired dozens and they stay in service forever!!!

I have 2, a brick-red version & an eggshell white/tan version. Maybe it'll have a "Mini-service manual" folded up inside a little pocket inside the set. Decent performers, but they do have all the inherent problems of the Porta-Potty CRT...

I've had two of those. A woodgrain one and a red one. Both had the newer style knobs though. They were good performers. I remember the red one's CRT had a small defect in the phosphor coating of the CRT causing a strange dot on the screen all the time. I never had any problems with either of them but they both got passed along to others when I upgraded to larger screened sets.

I've got one made for monkey wards. Ge AA chassis. Seems to be pretty well built. Great picture when working right with good DC restoration and flesh tones. Mine has a nasty ghost problem which popped up, but it definitely seems worth fixing.

Thanks for the tip, Zenith26kc20. I've been mainly a servicer of audio and sansui along with akai had similar problems with plate through connections on circuit boards . I may just pin and resolder them and see what happens while I'm in there.

Ditto on the solder connections at the delay line. We used to use blue wirewrap wire to reroute some of the griplets. We used blue for consistency - kind of a trademark of sorts too. We came to nickname the roll of wire "GE wire" for it's prominent use in GE AA/AB/AC sets and some EC chassis modules that also had griplets.
