Someone please save this Motorola SS B&W console
Not mine. If it was, it wouldn't be up for sale.

I like it - unfortunately just the gasoline bill to Connecticut and back would be over $300 *if* I had the time to make the drive.

I saw one of these a while ago, thought, big deal a B&W SS. So whats the deal on making it so desirable? (I was looking for a color tube set)
is it a rareity thing? ah re read the thread, a very rare TV. If I see it again I will see if I can save it. sorry a bit thick today. Last edited by DaveWM; 10-29-2009 at 12:54 PM.

Interestingly, the seller does not suggest using this as anything other than
a television set. Let's hope the low price does not attract fishtank buffs...

Solid state large screen B&W TV's are probably the rarest of what's out there. By the time solid state got going, most people were buying color console sets. The only people buying these later B&W consoles were people that did not want a color set and people who could not afford a color set. I know Zenith and Western Auto still offered cheap B&W consoles as late as '78-'79 and I think I remember reading on here where someone spotted a Sylvania from 1980. The only two large screen SS B&W's that I recall seeing over the past 20 years were a '79 Admiral built Truetone console and a '77-'78 23" Zenith in a steel tabletop cabinet.

That's the first solid-state B&W console I've ever seen as well. It's interesting to me that this set has a 6-position rotary UHF selector; could it be one of the first 6-position UHF varactor electronic tuners? Until now I thought Zenith had a patent on that design.

I have one of these, maybe a couple of years older in a Danish Modern cabinet. I say someone should grab this set as these are rare as hen's teeth!

I think that's some sort of mechanical deal for tuning a regular UHF tuner. I've seen many Motorolas that had pushbuttons that could be set to whatever UHF channel that was desired. Reminds me of the old mechanical pushbutton car radios. Wasn't the first set with electronic/varactor tuning the RCA G2000?
