Hello,

I found two candidates for the first all-transistor tv set. The SONY TV8 and the Philco Safari H2010L. Both are designated to be the first all-transistor tv set.

But which one actually was the first all-transistor tv set in the world?

- Probably a concept model in some factory, which was never sold to the public.

Didn't we just do this, BTW?

I recall a thread in the last year or two. I have always understood it to be the Safari; I don't know my Sony's. I guess the best question would be to ask "first production transistor TV". The Philco did have a hv rectifier tube, right? Who was the first to eliminate that in a production set?

Well my Philco was made in the last week of 1959.
Co incidentally around the same time Sony announced the TV8.

I've seen 4 Sony TV8's inside,3 date from May-July 1961 and one is very early 1962.

Worlds first large screen transistor color TV including solid state EHT rectifier was I think the British Thorn/BRC 2000 chassis from 1967,this was dual system 405 line black and white and 625 Pal color.

Even early trinitrons I think weren't solid state EHT rectifier and the first Sony
black and white TV with solid state EHT rectifier was probably around the
TV900U or TV 920U from 1968/9.Maybe something predates this?

All-transistor TV? You mean they've replaced the CRT with a big giant transistor that displays a picture?

The Philco Safari was introduced in June, 1959. I saw one on sale in summer of 1959. It has a 2 inch upward firing CRT onto a silvered mirror. The viewer could watch the image though a magnifying lens, that when viewed from 3 1/2 feet away would simulate a 14 inch virtual image. All transistor except it has two miniature rectifier tubes.

The Sony TV 8 was introduced in 1960. It was a direct view CRT. I am uncertain if it was 100% transistor.

I think those Sony's had an HV rectifier tube. I know that the Philco Safari does. I think the HV rectifier tubes remained in many portable B&W's up into the late '60's-early '70's.

Yes, you are correct, see the zoomed schematic section below for instance, in a Sony TV5-303xx circa 1964, which uses three subminiature HV rectifiers (1DK1) in a tripler circuit.
