1984 Sony Trinitron

I just got this Sony trinitron model KV-1362 today! It's a really nice little TV but the audio is very distorted when turned up more than half way. Picture is very sharp but grainy. Is graininess a drawback of coaxial RF?

Any idea why the audio might be distorted? Possibly bad caps on the audio circuit?

Wow! I like that one! I have not seen that model before, nice find. Worth all of 20 bucks. The graininess is most likely a bad connection. The RF input is usually really clear on these. Just check your wires and maybe go inside the set if you have to. I wonder if someone damaged the speaker, hook up something to the headphone jack and see what it sounds like then. If the distortion remains, it is the audio circuit.

The distortion is in the headphones too. I've tried several different cables and it's still grainy with the occasional horizontal ghost bars once in a great while but not bad. Better picture than the B&W TV I've been using!

I might try opening the TV up to check for loose connections. Anything I should be looking for inside the TV when checking for loose connections causing the graininess?

That's different from my KV-9400.

If I were you, I'd probably recap the audio circuit, and check the connections in the RF area.

Just leave it alone. A little distortion will do ya good!

I guess it could be a blown audio IC although that seems rare in a TV.

I can't recall if that model has discrete transistor outputs or a chip. If it's the transistor version, it uses complementary 2SA1013 and 2SC2383 transistors. One will blow, and eat a low-ohm resistor (2.7 or 3.3 ohms, IIRC). If it's the chip version, it usually has an STK563 hybrid module. If it's the STK version, look for bad solder all around the chip. Sometimes it's just the solder, other times it's both the STK and the bad solder joints.

If the picture is fine I'd run the audio thru a cheap stereo... Hook the cable to a vcr or similar device and run the audio into the stereo. Then run the cable to the tv for the picture.

I just opened it up and couldn't find any loose connections and tried adjusting things nothing improved. The grain didn't bother me at first but after watching TV with a clear picture this TV looks terrible! I wish I could figure out why this TV puts out a grainy picture!! GRRR!! It's even worse when I hook up to the front RF input. I'm guessing it might have a bad RF reciever.

I believe I figured out that this TV has a weak tuning module. It seems to have the symptoms of it. How much would something like this cost to repair? There are some adjustable screw things on the module, should I try adjusting those first?

The first thing I'd do would be to open up that tuner and resolder all of those adjustable coils and also resolder the ground connections.

Over the last few months I've been having some convergence problems in the lower left corner of the screen. It's mainly blue ghosting around white text. What would cause this?

My daily watcher is a 1979 SONY Trinitron KV-1923. It was manufactured December 1979 and I've owned it since 1990. It had a sound issue when I installed an RF modulator on her in 2005, so I could run my old VHS tapes. I suspected a ground connection but then I just bought a better set of cables, reconnected everything and the sound issue cleared up at once.

It's not my cables. It does it on (or when there was) over the air analog broadcast too. Gotta be a bad cap somewhere. Right now I'm more worried about the convergence issue.
