Philco 51-T1607

A friend of mine told about some old tvs upstairs in an old building he owns. I went up there today and took a look. There were about a dozen old sets. They were black and white sets from the 50s. I got this Philco,actually there were 2 of them so I got both of them. They have two separate chassis and a round crt. I think they were made in 1951. One is mostly complete except the speaker and all the tubes. The other one is missing the high voltage chassis and most of the knobs. The cabinet on it looks a little better though. These two looked the and have the most character of the sets up there. I also found a fairly decent back. Has anyone on here seen this model? Are they good performers when restored?

I have a 53-T2268, which is probably similar. It has the two chassis design at least. No idea how much different mine would be compared to yours. Mine performs pretty well, though it needs a little fine tuning yet. I replaced all of the paper caps, most of the electrolytics, a few out of tolerance resistors and 2 bad mica caps to get it working. The chassis are a bit packed, but luckily they're small enough to manage.

The twin chassis makes it easy to work on since you just need one on the bench at a time. A fairly straightforward set. And yes, they perform just fine. I think you'll be happy with the results once you do a recap and once over. I seem to recall stashing a spare chassis pair up in the attic, but they are probably for a little later model and not close enough to work. (at least not without mods)

I did take the chassis of of the more complete one. There are a lot of bumblebees to replace in it. I Will have to find tubes for it as they are all gone except the 2 hv rectifiers and one other tube. I have a box of tubes to go through so I may have some of them. Both sets are missing the speaker also. The less complete one is the one I will try to fix up as it looks better. Are the crts in these decent? I have two chances to have a good one. It has been many years since these have been powered up.

i just aquiried a philco like the ones previously stated . I did not obtain a schematic yet, will be doing that in the next few days . I replaced the tubes which tested bad , then replaced the bumble bee caps, wax caps and electrolytics as well . The two selenium rectifiers tested good , so for now i will leave them in and eventually changed them . Anyhow after powering it up on the variac , i had great sound, high voltage but only a vertical line on the screen . I sprayed the two vertical pots with cleaner/lube and checked them with a meter but still only get a line which opens up to a inch with controls all the way out . Any one have a idea of where i should check next ???

You said you have a vertical line that only opens up an inch. Do you mean an inch tall or wide? You said you sprayed the vertical pots, did you mean horizontal?

It's probably more than just a dirty pot but I thought I'd ask in case you meant what you wrote. It's the kind of typo I make a lot.

Sounds like the horizontal oscillator isn't running, or maybe a bad connection on the deflection yoke, causing the H deflection to not work. On my 53-T2268 V19 is the horizontal output, V18 the horizontal multiplier . I'd also be checking the width control to make sure it works. If you haven't replaced the capacitors in the set, then its anyone's guess what could be the problem. When I did my Philco, probably 90% of the bumblebee caps were actually cracked. I don't have a cap checker to analyze them but I'd pretty much guarantee they were all bad. I had horrible horizontal and vertical instability problems with mine before re-capping, finally after doing all the paper caps I chased the problem to a couple of silver mica caps in the horizontal oscilator area.
