zenith audio

i just picked up a zenith sg27obn console. very nice picture unfortunatley has an audio problem. scratchy to say the least. beautiful cabinet, the proverbial old lady set. she even found an rca vcr with the remote, papers, and the original box. i like this set and may set it next to the chromacolor. anyone have any ideas on the sound issue? thanks!

Is it scratchy when adjusting the volume? If so, the volume pot may need cleaning.

scratchy period. adjusting through remote (on screen).this is a really good looking set -picture is so good,i may keep it. the audio is very scratchy-like a busted speaker on an old unit except that it has the range (loud) just not clear. this vintage (1991) is beyond my range of knowledge.

After double checking the speaker lead connections I would go in search of a bad solder joint.

Check the board for leaking caps. Zenith used some bad electrolytics in the late 80's/early 90's.
