Question about Magnavox 4 lead safety cap 250663-19 - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Howdy,
I have a 19" touch tune Magnavox set that uses a T809 chassis with that pesky grey safety cap that shorts. I found a very used cap in my junk that got the set playing for a couple of hours. Then, that one shorted. I've looked in all my TV parts catalogs for this part without success. I've heard that these Magnavox caps were unreliable and are a common problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck replacing this four leg cap with something more reliable that is easier to obtain. The part number is 250663-19 and the value is: .0195 uF, 1.2kv, 5%. The cap is connected from the HOT collector to ground. This set had a nice picture when I had it going and I'd like to keep it as a spare TV (at least until a 4-tube hybrid Zenith comes along).

A regular 2 lead cap will work. You should be able to find that value, or make it by putting several caps in parallel.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking I could use a regular 2 leg cap (or caps) to replace the original 4 leg cap. But, I figured I'd run it past you guys first. I'll check around for a modern disc or orange drop to use as a replacement.

Got the caps installed today and it fired up with a nice picture. I used two current production Sprague orange drops. Should be more reliable than the original Magnavox part. This set is a '79 model. Would that have been prior to Philips buying Magnavox?

I think Philips came into play around '75, though there has been some debate about that.

Philips acquired Magnavox in late 1974. 1st purchase offer was in August 1974. Philco/Sylvania(GTE) purchase came in 1981.

Philips established PolyGram in 1972, and acquired Magnavox (1974) and Signetics (1975) in the United States. Acquisitions in the 1980s included the television business of GTE Sylvania (1981) and the lamps business of Westinghouse (1983). The Compact Disc was launched in 1983, while other landmarks were the production of Philips' 100-millionth TV set in 1984 and 300-millionth Philishave electric shaver in 1995.
