Some one in my family haves an Sept. 1988 made "Hitachi" tv set; somewhere underneath the screen it's saying "smoked screen".

Sounds like it may have something to do with darker-tinted phosphors...or maybe darker glass on the tube.
Didn't someone do their tubes with "frosted" glass back in the '60s? Kinda sounds like one of those tactics.
