Virtually all modern TVs use that service menu instead of having pots to adjust inside the set for things like vertical size and RGB bias. Do a search on google groups to find out how to get into a sony's service menu. Be careful because you can really screw up the set if you don't know what you're doing. The nice thing about sony's service menu is that you have to save the new settings to the EEPROM before they become permanent. If you don't, the settings will only last until the set is unplugged.

VM stands for velocity modulation. It's a technique used to make the picture look sharper than the set next to it at best buy. It basically slows down the horizontal scanning at the edges of objects. Vertical white lines on a dark background are made to appear thinner than they should be. Some people like the way it looks, but it's hated by videophiles. Kind of the equivalent to always keeping the loudness switch on your stereo turned on.
