In 1973 calculators were still primitave by todays standards. As late as 76 when I was in collage slide rule use was still taught. Lord knows though that I do not remember how it worked
The engineers in the movie would have probably cut their teeth on slide rules and were more comfortable with them than the newfangled calculators.
