Colortrakker, Five Rivers is the company I was thinking of. A news report I read stated that congress had passed a tariff on all Chinese TV sets (I am oversimplifying) and all that money collected was to be distributed to the American owned TV manufacturers. Since Five Rivers was the only one left, they were to get all the money. But then the law was repealed (too much crying from somebody, I guess) so I guess that spelled big trouble for the company.
The list that dtuomi posted a link to is interesting. I had come across it before. I'd like to have more information on some of those companies; the relationship between Howard & Muntz was one I didn't know about.
One company I forgot on my list was Heathkit, though that is sort of a special case since they didn't completely build their sets, but almost. Of course, there were lots of nameplates that came and went, and some product sharing. (Arvin sold some color sets in the 60s that were built by Wells-Gardner; remember the Sony built by Admiral? Curtis Mathes with chassis by NEC; GE Portacolors relabeled as Philco-Ford) A book could be written on all the manufacturers and brands.
