All of the "antique" radios I worked on some 50 or so years back used the field coil of the speakers as a smoothing choke, so there was no separate DC supply for the coil.
My brother had started a radio repair business and when he went into the RCAF during WW II, Ikind of kept things running. My early intro to electronics.
