Here's a hugely late comment on this necrothread. Back in the early 90s, a friend and I designed and built a few prototypes of a bi-directional RS422<-->Infrared remote. It would learn IR commands, and translate them into Sony protocol 422 signals, to allow control of pro tape machines from standard consumer remotes. It also had the ability to convert 422 editor commands to IR VTR commands. While consumer VTRs make pretty poor edit machines, it would let you control garden-variety consumer decks. It would also allow computer selection of some custom/user commands, such as placing audio channels in record ready, marking insert edit in/out locations, completing a preview, and executing the insert edit. All from a consumer remote.
We showed it at NAB one year, sold a couple, and the following year there was another less-capable device, IR to 422 unidirectional, and locked to a single type of remote. The only nifty thing about it was theirs used a shuttle/jog knob, while ours used a pair of buttons for shuttle, and a different pair for jog. We couldn't do half-speed, for example, unless we programmed it. Good news is theirs didn't sell much either.
All that said, the OP's A350 is a nice controller for Panasonics.
