Took a while to get back to it but it turns out the problem with this TV was as mundane as it gets: the little push-buttons for Power and the other controls were either dirty or oxidized and came back to life after two blasts of contact cleaner!
Next hurdle: Trying to figure out why it just shuts off when I put a VHS tape in, it's looking like I have to desolder wires(!!!) to remove the VCR mech and I don't think I care enough to do that.
