Unless the CRT in your set is, as we say here on VK, unobtanium, I see no reason why your project has to end. Is the CRT a special type which is difficult or impossible to find? I can't imagine that to be the case, as most American color televisions made in the '60s-'70s used CRTs such as 23EGP22, et al.
The only thing I can think of which would stop your project in its tracks for good would be if the original CRT is some special type, which I doubt since your set is an American make. I have never heard of an American-made color TV using any kind of non-standard CRT.
I would try looking on eBay for a replacement. Many times good used CRTs show up on that site for reasonable prices.
Good luck, and please, don't give up. As I said, unless the original CRT is in fact unobtanium, you should be able to find a replacement somewhere, even if it takes some scrounging around. Tube-powered NTSC color televisions may be obsolete in this age of digital TV, but they can still be repaired in most cases, even though the repair may not be an easy job.
Your TV is a Zenith, so finding a replacement for the CRT should be possible. I read somewhere, I believe right here on VK some time ago, that it is impossible to "kill" a Zenith television, given their hand-wired, solid copper chassis and other design features most other color TV manufacturers quit using in favor of cheap design shortcuts years and decades ago.
