Well, I figured out what the problem was - it happened every time I went to play the tape after rewinding it - the tape became too slack and the take-up reel wouldn't start moving, causing the camcorder to stop playing and spin the supply reel backwards to retract the slack tape. I guess the flashing lights indicate a potential tape jam. Anyhow, the problem cleared up after using the camcorder more.
