The AA5 tube radios would be a good start also before taking (and understanding) the plunge on tv's. Develop your soldering skills and basic electronics theory. The right "aptitude", comfortable with tools and mechanical take-apart knowhow will help too.
As for books, get you an RCA Tube Manual. It's great for tube descriptions and element principles and circuit understanding, etc.
