well first off you must change all the electrolytic capacitors as that year if they are original they could short and cause many more problems. waves in pictures can sometimes be the grid, ac getting to places it should not be, like those caps. this repair man you speak of, did he mention changing the caps befor anything else? no matter how clean its still a 58 and things get old and sometime shorts out so i would start there first, CAPS then tubes and see where your at and then move on to checking other areas depending on how the set is working.
