Removing scuffs from Photo Finish

Hey everyone!
So, I've got an early 1960's Philco 23" B&W console that I just pulled out of storage. Unfortunately, while in storage, some paint splatter ended up getting on the top of the cabinet. I tried various chemical products to get the paint specks off, but, in the end, scraping each spot with a putty knife was necessary. I'm left with some light scuffs on the cabinet top that I would like to make go away. The scuffs only go as deep as the lacquer finish, the faux woodgrain photo finish below is still in perfect shape.
Could I lightly sand the top with something like #0000 steel wool and spray lacquer over it? Thanks in advance for any advice.
