One way you *could* do this is by tracing a pattern out in laminate wallboard, and cutting it out, then hollowing out the center, effectively making a "picture frame" reinforcement for the back, then gluing it to the inside. It would make the back thicker by about 1/4"....if the screws are really short, just get longer screws.
