I have a 25cc50 here I have been using lately that has that exact problem. Im sure its that devider resistor you are holding. NTE makes a generic line of those, I think thats a HVD-3, moyers should have.
Im not quite following the issue that started the width problem, but, did you try changing the output tube? Its very easy to 'hurt' them resulting in extended warmup time and reduced width.
