Unless you plan to UPS this beast, removing the tube is not needed. It is small and locked tightly in the projection cylinder. Tube alignment in the cylinder is critical and best left alone until after restoration. Then you go down that endless road.
The big problem with this set is the condition of the mirror at the bottom of the cylinder. The chassis is superb with 5 IF's as I remember. That gives a great pix with loads of chroma crawl.
