Cost cutting has been going on forever. I have two Philco Seventeeners, one from 1957 and one from 1958. The 1957 one has a nice brass tuning knob, the 1958 tuning knob is plastic(and has a crack). Of course since it is on a DTV box, it is always on Channel 3.

Even before that the was the "Decal wood grain" used by radio manufacturers(mainly Zenith) to hide cheap wood.
