Also, they just seem to be working-class people. The house is neat and clean and not at all out-of-line for the time period. Contrary to popular belief, everyone wasn't walking around in "coat & tie" back then, despite what you saw on Nick at Nite. Perhaps the film itself, being dark & monochrome, lends a "darker" feeling overall but I just don't see why these folks are to be pitied.
