Yeah, some people don't understand that cheap entry level TV's often mean something that will crap out before you know what hit you. It's like me Brother-in-law that kept buying the cheapest no name DVD players that he could find all because he does not want to spend any money. Then, he was complaining about how they crapped out after a month. I told him that he'd stand a better chance of getting something that would last if he'd spend a little more money. You're not saving any money if you're constantly buying cheap garbage that you are having to replace every time you turn around.
As far as me picking up free TV's, I just love getting non-working sets from individuals who have not taken them to a shop. Those are generally the easy fixes that I can knock out in 30 minutes (or less).
