Convergence amplifier IC
Sounds like the convegence amp IC died. Pretty common problem. Part number is STK-393-110. I've done a ton of them. It's just a matter of unsoldering the old one and soldering in the new one. It also needs to clamped to a big aluminum heatsink in the set. Don't forget to use a thin coat of heat sink grease. The IC is IC8C00 and located on the signal PC board on the left edge of the chassis (as viewed from the back of the set)
You didn't do anything to cause it to happen, except turning the TV on. These chips run pretty hot and just eat themselves up.
