Same here... For me, it was a few retired World War II tech guys who lived in the neighborhood, and would often be seen puttering in their garages with old HAM equipment or old TVs. I befriended a few of them, and that was a great benefit in learning about older stuff, that I couldn't ever have learned in tech school in the 80s.
