Well one had 2.5 hours to accomplish what the original did in 3 years... As for your lack of explanation, remember that in the old show, you are seeing the end result of their interaction. They had to start somewhere, only now, the time line has been changed. So these people meet in a different setting and of course they would interact differently.

Well Branan and Braga(sp?) have already altered the Vulcan disciplines, well actually after they were slightly modified in ST 5. There is no going back.
