The other issue is abuse. The Panasonic died after about the 100th drop on a concrete floor. In between I had to go in a couple times to repair connections which failed from the hard use I gave it. The GE didn't fare so well with those hard drops. So, use it carefully and maybe upgrade the batteries when the OEM's die.
(reminds me of my vain attempt to find a good Motorola cordless phone in the 90s. These were made in the USA and had lots of features, but were only 49mhz. I must have bought 4 or 5 over the years and not a single one of them lasted a week. Yep, I was dedicated! Most of the ones I picked up were factory reconditioned as they had long since been discontinued. The first one I bought was a gift for my sister, when they were still in production. It died within weeks so I called Moto and they shipped a new one no questions asked, I didn't even need to send the old one first)

I still have an old Radio Shack cordless phone from 1983 that still works, it uses the 49 Mc band from the phone to the handset and 1700 kc (just above the AM band) from the base to the phone. Those were the days.
