In October of 2007, a friend and I were discussing this. The Dow was at 14,200 and I remarked it had no where to go but down, with all the layoffs then. He was a trader and agreed, but he did alot of research and rarely made a bad bet. Until now...My wife's IRA is at 1997 levels . She has lost huge amounts. Aim, American, AIG-Valic (not the stock) Save for the long term? I am not so sure anymore. She put the max in , has worked 35 years in hospitals, teaching med-surgery, running whole units, and now in administration. We followed the rules. I know AIG lost their shirts insuring bad mortgages- butthis has been a collective disaster affecting everyone, though. (myself included). The problem now is, that we HAVE to wait for corporate America improvement, yet I don't see it. I remember sitting in my living room in December of 2007, thinking we were headed for a disaster in the markets. I was that sure. Well, hell, I didn't take my own advice. But at least my house is paid for...No one is really looking out for us. Wall Street is not to be trusted anymore and our elected officials know even less in how to police it. I know who to blame here, but I will get the thread closed.
