I suspect that "auto brightness" setting connects an "electric eye" on the front of the set, probably a cad cell, so that the TV brightness increases when ambient room light does. I had a Sylvania set with that feature. To test it, turn the switch to auto brightness, turn on room lights, find the "eye" on the front of the set and put your finger over it. Brightness should go down. More of a sales gimmick than useful. That looks like the eye towards the bottom of the control panel.
