I just had another thought. The Maggotboxes have a master power switch on the side of the unit. Leaving the master power switch off on those boxes, when not in use, may lenghten it's life.
My cousin has had his Maggotbox Wal-Mart special DTV box for a little over a month and it's not given him any problems.
